The Baptisms of Scripture

The purpose of this series is to look at the concept of baptism as it is described in the Scriptures. Most people have a very narrow view of baptism that is often based on church traditions rather than the Word of God. Baptism, as it is seen in both the Old and New Testaments, is a much deeper subject; it has great spiritual meaning beyond that of a simple religious ordinance or ritual. When a person hears the word “baptism” their first thought is usually water baptism, but there are many different baptisms spoken of in the Scriptures, most of which do not involve water at all. In this series of lessons, we examine the various baptisms found in the Scriptures to see the origin and meaning of the word, and to understand the importance of the spiritual baptism that places us in Christ in this present dispensation.

Why Paul Baptized People with Water - Part 1

The Baptisms of Scripture

There is no question that during his Acts period ministry Paul baptized both Jewish and Gentile believers with water. The question is, "Why?" We look at Paul's statements that God did not send him to baptize, but to preach the gospel. We also look at the fact that the Acts period, especially after Acts 7, was a transitional period, moving from God's offering of the kingdom to Israel to God's building of a new body of believers, the Church. This helps explain why Paul continued the practice of water baptism among the Jews, just as he also continued to observe the law: circumcision, miraculous healing, keeping Jewish Sabbaths and feast days, taking Jewish vows, and even worshiping in the Jewish temple in Jerusalem.

This series of Bible studies examines the many different baptisms found in the Scriptures, looking at the practice and meaning of each. Much focus will be placed on the one baptism that is still in operation today in this present dispensation of God's grace: the baptism by the Holy Spirit that places believers into Christ. These lessons were given during the adult Sunday school class at Grace Bible Church in 2021.
