James teaches that showing partiality in the treatment of others is sinful and evidence of spiritual immaturity. An attitude of partiality is contrary to God's evaluation of the poor and the rich. It rewards the rich, who are typically the ones who oppress believers. It violates the royal law: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."
