Reminders to Timothy - Hold Fast the Sound Words

2 Timothy - Preparation for Perilous Times

(2 Timothy 1:13-18) Paul reminds Timothy to hold fast (firm) to the sound words he had heard from Paul, meaning the gospel of God's grace and the truth of the mystery. He is to keep (guard) this beautiful deposit of truth that has now been entrusted to him, protecting it from corruption and attack. Many had already begun to turn away from Paul, likely because of his teaching, though not all had. Timothy, being timid and fearful by nature, needed this important reminder.

A verse by verse study of Paul's last letter, written to Timothy, his son in the faith. Paul, knowing he had completed his own ministry from the Lord and was near the end of his life, wrote this letter to Timothy (and to all believers) stressing the importance of continuing the ministry of God's Word. Perilous times were coming, during which more and more people would resist the truth and even turn their ears away from it. Yet, the charge to Timothy, as well as to every believer, is to hold fast to the truth of the mystery and the gospel of God's grace that God had given through Paul, to continue to live out these truths, and to faithfully proclaim this message of grace to others.
