“Being confident of this very thing that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)

This assuring Scripture is especially clear in view of the fact that the world is full of incomplete works of men. Man has a difficult time ever starting a work especially for the Lord, and then, due to a multitude of circumstances, he seems to never really finish.

We remember that it was God that began everything. “In the beginning, God”, is that grand statement made in Genesis 1. God began and completed the work of creation (Genesis 2:1).

“Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.”

We know that when the Lord Jesus died on the cross, He finished the great plan of salvation for all people! Not only did He save mankind from sin, but He satisfied God’s righteousness and holiness, fulfilled every demand of the Law, and redeemed all of creation for ever!

God has completed the work of revelation. In His infinite wisdom, God progressively began to reveal His will through the Word. This work of revealing Himself to mankind has been completed. The revelation of the mystery through the apostle Paul “fulfills” God’s plan for the ages.

“Whereof I am made a minister according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfill (complete) the word of God. Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints.” (Colossians 1:25-26)

It behooves every believer to put absolute confidence in God’s Word. Sometimes, it may seem to us an impossibility for God to keep His promises, yet we must ever remember that He is not a man, He never lies, He is all powerful and wise, and is completely faithful. A great example of this is found in the life of Abraham. God promised Abraham and Sarah a son, even after they were past the years of bearing children. Romans 4:16-21 gives a summary of this great event in God’s plan and purpose. It states of Abraham:

“He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that what He had promised, He was also able to perform.”

Seeing so clearly, and believing so emphatically, that God will finish what He begins, what manner of persons ought we to be? Paul wrote to the Corinthians about their giving. He encouraged them by reminding them that they were rich through Christ (2 Corinthians 8:9). And then admonished them:

“Now therefore perform the doing of it; that as there was a readiness to will so there may be a performance also out of that which ye have.” (2 Corinthians 8:11)

Ponder the tremendous truth that God has always finished what He began and rejoice that we are told:

“And ye are complete in him, who is the head of all principality and power.” (Colossians 2:10)
