Three parties in Israel (Herodians, Sadducees, and Pharisees) had questioned Jesus, trying to ensnare Him in His words and find an accusation they could bring against Him; but He had silenced them all with His answers. Jesus then posed a question of His own to the Pharisees, concerning their promised Messiah; a question none could answer, and after this, no one dared question Him anymore. Jesus then turned to speak to the multitides and His own disciples, warning them about the hypocrisy of the scribes and Pharisees and pronouncing woe upon them for their wickedness.
