The Triumphal Entry

The Passion Week

Six days before the Passover, Jesus had supper at Bethany with Mary Martha, and Lazarus. The next day great multitudes who heard He was there lined the pathway as Jesus made His way toward Jerusalem riding upon a donkey and a colt, in fulfillment of the prophecy of Zecharaih 9:9. The people laid palm brances and pieces of clothing in His path, proclaiming, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!" This was Jesus' public presentation of Himself to the people of Israel as the Christ, the One anointed by God to be their King, as prophesied in Daniel 9:24-27. The Jewish rulers were indignant and tried to get Jesus to silence His disciples, but among themselves they were worried that the whole world had gone after Him and would believe in Him. Sadly, the people's shouts of praise and welcome would soon turn to cries of scorn and derision.
