The Parable of the Lost Son

The Parables of Jesus

(Luke 15:11-32) In this lesson, we look at the 3rd of three parables Jesus tells in response to the complaints and murmuring of the scribes and Pharisees that Jesus welcomed and ate with tax collectors and sinners. The first two parables deal with a shepherd seeking a lost sheep and a woman seeking a lost coin. The third parable, which we are more familiar with as the parable of the prodigal son, deals with a father watching for the return of a lost son. It contains more detail than the other two parables, in particular in regard to the son who was not lost but remained at home with his father. We look at the meaning of this parable to Israel as well as how we might apply this parable in our own lives today.
